Analysts continue their broad based adoption of social media

August 30th, 2010 by sagecircle

icon-social-media-blue.jpgSageCircle did a big update – over 400 adds or changes – recently of the Analyst Social Media Directory. While we do regular Directory updates, these large ones tend to make us sit back and take stock of what is happening in terms of analysts and their use of social media.

.

First observation is that even though the Directory has over 3,800 entries, there is no shortage of new items to add. For instance, in the last update of 364 items we had some completely new analyst entries where an analyst just started using social media so we added the basics of a LinkedIn profile, Twitter handle, and blog URL. In other cases, the analyst already had a Twitter handle and LinkedIn profile in the Directory, but only recently started a blog. We also recorded 30 departures from the analyst ranks as well as nine changes to existing Twitter handles.

.

Second observation is that there are a variety of social media platforms being used as you can see from this table:

Blog – Firm individual 667
Blog – Firm non-analyst 2
Blog – Firm team 344
Blog – Partner 9
Blog – Personal brand 108
Community 99
Facebook 8
Forum 1
LinkedIn 1,035
Podcast 9
Resources 2
Twitter – Firm 119
Twitter – Team 42
Twitter – Personal 1,263
Video 123

The third observation is th Read the rest of this entry »

AR’s Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance in a Crisis – September Analyst Relations Coffee Talk

August 24th, 2010 by sagecircle

Icon - Coffee TalksAre you ready when – not if – the “stuff hits the fan” and AR needs to leap into crisis communications mode?

.

At any minute any analyst relations (AR) team can get a call about a crisis at their company that will throw all their plans for the day and to-do lists out the window. How well prepared the AR team is will determine how effective their response will be. This is especially true when the crisis requires hyper fast outreach and response because there will no time to “invent the wheel,” which means that critical steps can fall between the cracks if there is not an established process in place.

.

Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance in a Crisis

In the September AR Coffee Talk we will be discussing the key elements to effective crisis AR. While “prior planning” is the theme of this discussion, it is not just planning that counts when a crisis hits, but the response also builds on team cu Read the rest of this entry »

Analysts can use Social Media to Bypass AR so AR needs to be Ready

August 24th, 2010 by sagecircle

icon-social-media-blue.jpgDuring the “Impact of Social Media on the Analyst Industry” panel discussion between Altimeter Group, Tekrati, Edelman, and SageCircle (click here for replay) there were over 400 tweets commenting on what was said or asking questions of the panelists. This post is one in an occasional series to respond to those tweets.

.

Comments to Altimeter Group analyst Jeremiah Owyang’s (@jowyang) verbal point that analysts can bypass AR and go directly to executives and domain experts using social media:

.
I don’t think you want to bypass AR. I try to be an enabler rather than a gatekeeper. Why do you want to bypass AR? (Wendy Shlensky, Infosys, @WLS26)

.

Bypassing the AR process is not good at all @jowyang. Product managers and sales PPL should not be talking to analysts. (Stephen Loudermilk, Alcatel-Lucent, @LoudyOutLoud)

.

First and foremost, analyst relations (AR) teams have to realize that the horse has already left the barn. Social-media savvy analysts certainly have the capability to interact directly with any of your social media using colleagues and there is nothing AR can do to prevent it. This is not a new phenomena as analysts have always harvested vendor staff business cards at events in order to develop a contact database of executives and domain experts. What is new is how much easier it is harvest these contacts because a face-to-face meeting is no longer needed. Rather than bemoan this fact, AR ne Read the rest of this entry »

Charlene Li’s Open Leadership book plays two roles for AR and illustrates evolving influence

August 23rd, 2010 by sagecircle

Book Cover - Open LeadershipAltimeter Group founder and former Forrester star analyst Charlene Li’s (Twitter, blog) book Open Leadership is an expansion on the themes of Groundswell, the 2008 business best seller co-authored with Forrester star analyst Josh Bernoff (Twitter, blog, note 1). Open Leadership (see below for official blurb) is more of a “how to cookbook” on how corporations and government organizations can use social media without giving up necessary control.

.

Open Leadership (click here to buy on Amazon) is relevant reading for analyst relations (AR) professionals in the following situations:

  1. AR for a vendor in the social media market, products or services
  2. AR teams trying to convince their executive sponsors and internal stakeholders that adopting social media is critical for dealing with analysts
  3. AR professionals working to understand how social media is changing influence

Social Media Vendors. Open Leadership is simply a form of published research. AR at social media vendors should read the book just like they would read an analyst’s research notes to understand Li’s opinions and underlying research framework. This would provide valuable insights for briefings and other outbound interactions. However, more so than research notes, books are frozen in time so it will be important to keep up with Li’s research and evolving opinion by reading her blog and visiting her personal – not just Altimeter’s – website.

Tool for Educating AR’s Executive Sponsors. Open Leadership complements SageCircle’s research on social media’s impact on analysts and A Read the rest of this entry »
